According to water Supervisor Sonny Gank, the torrential rains had an effect on the water main break in front of Mountainview Veterinary clinic. He called the incident “an act of Mother Nature.” Gank also attributed possible cause of the water main break to a brief power outage at the filtration plant, which may have caused an influx of water in the pipes. Gank and members of the water/sewer department responded to the call around 9 a.m. and then proceeded to clean up the parking lot.
“We have a really good water/sewer department,” said newly elected Water Commissioner Sonny Rhodes, who was on scene all day.
According to Gank the old water pipe was dug up an replaced with a 6-foot length of 10-inch plastic pipe. Larry Mongold, a water meter reader, estimated that about 200,000 gallons of water were lost.
The water main break affected several area businesses, including KFC/Long John Silvers, Denny’s Mountainview Veterinary Clinic and US Cellular. KFC and Denny’s were closed due to the incident.
According to Allegheny Power Spokesperson Janice Lantz, 12,000 customers in the greater Keyser area were affected by a weather-induced power outage that lasted from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service forecast, a Hazardous Weather Outlook was issued at 3:16 p.m. Tuesday for Eastern Mineral County. The outlook issued severe wind and possible hail from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Today’s weather outlook for this evening and afternoon is much like Tuesday’s, with a cold front bringing in possible severe thunderstorms and damaging winds and large hail.
