KEYSER — Three local businesses are joining forces to help the Faith in Action food pantry fill enough food baskets to provide Thanksgiving dinner for over a hundred needy families in the area.
Keyser Med-A-Save Pharmacy, the Chessie Federal Credit Union, and the Wepco Federal Credit Union are now accepting donations of non-perishable foods — all the “fixin’s” — to go with the traditional turkey dinner.
Each of the businesses has a box in the lobby to accept the donations.
Items on the preferred list include canned corn, green beans, pumpkin, cranberries, dressing mix, jello, cake mix, and icing.
Monetary donations will be used to purchase a turkey for each basket, as well as 5 lbs. of potatoes.
According to Harold Walters, who has worked with the food pantry for many years, the need is especially great this year.
“We’re hoping to give out 170 baskets for Thanksgiving,” he said.
Walters expressed his appreciation for the businesses, and also for the other businesses and organizations that have lent a helping hand to the pantry.
“Martin’s just held a drive, and raised $1,453,” he said. “And the Keyser High School football team raised $1,300.” In addition, Weight Watchers and Keyser Primary-Middle School have been assisting in raising funds.
The KHS students and Potomac State College athletes also help unload trucks when they arrive at the facilty.
Kay Lannon of Med-A-Save emphasized the importance of giving to help those who are less fortunate.
“I’ve walked in their shoes,” she said. “At one time I didn’t know where my next gallon of milk was coming from. I have always believed you have to give in order to get back.”
“You wouldn’t believe some of the stories I’ve heard,” Walters agreed.
Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation to the food pantry may make a check out to Faith in Action and drop it off at Med-A-Save, Chessie or Wepco.
