PIEDMONT — Piedmont Councilmember Susie Clark has resigned from her position, effectively immediately.
Mayor Ebbie Gilmore announced Clark's resignation Wednesday evening during the Piedmont Council meeting.
When asked if the council member had given any reason for her resignation, Gilmore replied, “No, she didn't.”
Clark, who has served on the council since 2002, has chaired the Piedmont Homefest celebration for several years and was also instrumental in raising funds for Piedmont residents suffering from life-threatening illnesses.
Until this past summer, she served as the town's housing commissioner. After Streets Commissioner Bob Fike complained during a meeting about the number of deteriorating properties in the town, however, she voluntarily switched positions with him.
In September, when the News-Tribune called attention to the difficulties Piedmont had been having in getting together a quorum for a meeting since June 11, Clark responded in a letter to the editor.
“According to my minutes, the last meeting was July 22, where there were representatives from the WindForce team along with a few business owners. However, no one from the News-Tribune,” she wrote.
“I believe that everyone on the council has their heart into the best interest of the city. However, we are all human and can't attend every meeting...”
Clark's resignation leaves Bob Fike, Chuck Dawson, Mickey Racco and Brian Redman on the council.
Gilmore said he and the council would have to appoint someone to fill her position. He did not give a target date for the appointment.
“We'll go over a few names and see what's what,” he said.
