KEYSER - Sara Powell, a cystic fibrosis and transplant patient at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, had two wishes before her double-lung transplant early this year.
One wish was to go to Walt Disney World for her 13th birthday. The second wish was to be able to dance the role of Alice in “Alice in Wonderland” with East Pointe Ballet Company in Keyser.
After having a successful double-lung transplant surgery on March 1, 2011, her dreams came true later this year. On June 5, 2011, many of Sara’s friends and family attended a benefit concert in Pittsburgh in honor of Sara. The concert was provided by a cystic fibrosis nurse in Pittsburgh along with his colleagues and friends. At that concert, Sara was given a surprise trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
On Sept. 30, Sara, along with her family, traveled to Florida to spend a week in Universal Studios and Walt Disney World. While there, she got to meet the Disney character Alice.
“Alice in Wonderland” has always been Sara’s favorite book and movie.
On Nov. 18, Sara’s second dream came true when she was healthy and strong enough to dance the lead role, Alice, in “Alice in Wonderland” with East Pointe Ballet Company in Keyser.
Sara continues to live an active teenage life now. She is an eighth grade student at Keyser Primary Middle School where is an honor roll student and a member of the Concert Band and Builder’s Club.
In addition to taking dance classes with Melissa Purdy at East Pointe Ballet Company, she is a member of Girl Scout Troop 40619 and is a part of the Bell Choir, Youth Choir, and a Children’s Church teacher at Fountain United Brethren Church.

Sara returns to Children’s Hospital for a few days every three months for appointments and procedures to evaluate her progress. She is due for her nine-month visit at the end of December.
Sara, along with her family, continues to thank their family, friends, and community for all of the support they have shown them during Sara’s fight against cystic fibrosis.
She and her friends at East Pointe Ballet will present “The Nutcracker in New York City” on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Keyser High School Theatre.
Sara is looking forward to dancing the part of a Sailor Doll alongside her friend, Ivy Rodeheaver.
