The membership of the New Creek Volunteer Fire Department would like to present a one year report for the ambulance service of the department. Please accept the following report and statistics.
New Creek VFD placed our first ambulance in service in August of 2007. The first ambulance was relocated from the Ridgeley VFD. The second was purchased from Tri-Towns EMS, partially paid for by the Ambulance Authority, and partially by New Creek. $20,000 was given from the Ambulance Authority and an additional $10,000 from New Creek to purchase the ambulance. Along with the ambulance, a newer heavy duty stryker cot and a LP 12 lifepak monitor was included for the total price of $30,000. New Creek VFD originally purchased $34,705 in equipment for both units. A total of $18,656 was spent in supplies for both units. A combined total, out of pocket of expense for New Creek was $53,361.
Thus far, Ambulance 38-70 has responded to 311 emergencies, and 6,050 miles have been placed on the unit. Ambulance 38-71 has responded to 142 emergencies, and has placed 2,520 miles on the unit.
Since placing the ambulances in service, the department has experienced a large spike in call volume. In only months prior to the ambulances being placed in service, the department would handle an average of 30-35 emergency calls a month. Since the upgraded EMS service, the department has responded to no less than 46 emergencies (in August 2007), and has ran as many as 72 emergencies. (which has happened twice – February and April 2008). In an average year, the department usually responds to approximately 480 calls. From August 2007 to August 12, 2008, the department has responded to 723 emergencies. Out of the 723, 472 (65%) were EMS related emergencies. From January 1, 2008 until today, the department has responded to 465 emergencies.
Mutual aid has been a large factor for the increase of calls. From January 1 2008 to the present, the department has given mutual aid 125 times, and received mutual aid 28 times. Those numbers include fire and ems calls. A total of 14 of the 28 were ems related. 76 of the 125 were EMS related. Since the ambulance service was established, members of New Creek VFD have only failed to respond an ambulance on 3 occasions. Over the past year, the department has provided BLS care 180 times, and ALS 146, and EMS other, 50. A response time of just 9 minutes for the past year also. The response time begins at the initial alert for the emergency service, and ends upon the first arriving emergency vehicle. The department is proud of the accomplishments of our membership, and are grateful for the assistance of the Ambulance Authority and citizens of New Creek. We look forward to a future of continuous superior emergency medical care for not only the citizens of New Creek, but to anyone who may need our assistance.
