KEYSER - Cub Scouts promise to give good will and a Boy Scout promises to help other people at all times. By participating in the annual Scouting for Food program, Scouts fulfill these words.
Each October, the Potomac Council sponsors its annual Scouting For Food as Scouts from across the region collect food from neighbors to be donated to local food pantries.
In 2008, 33 units participated in the council’s annual service project with 397 local Scouts collecting 21,369 pounds of food for local pantries including: Faith in Action Pantry, Keyser; Romney United Methodist Church Pantry; Petersburg Interfaith Pantry; Tri-Towns Food Bank, Westernport; Wesley Chapel UMC Pantry, Short Gap; Interfaith Food Pantry, Cresaptown; Ft. Ashby Pantry; House of Hope, Swanton; George’s Creek Pantry, Lonaconing; Frostburg Interfaith Pantry; Calvary UMC Pantry, Ridgeley; Second Baptist Church Pantry, St. Anthony’s Place, and Sts. Peter and Paul Pantry, all of Cumberland; Wardensville Food Pantry; Frostburg UMC Pantry; St. John’s Episcopal Pantry, Oakland; Del Ray Church Pantry, Del Ray; Western Maryland Food Bank and Union Rescue Mission, Cumberland; LaVale UMC Pantry; Mac House, Moorefield; Dove Center, Oakland and Barton UMC Pantry.
Scouting for Food is a nationwide program. New Creek and Keyser Scouts will join in the effort.
Locally Scouts will be meeting at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, at Skip’s Honda in Keyser to distribute information about the year’s drive.
They will return to Skip’s at 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, to begin the annual collection and delivery to the Faith in Action Food Pantry.
Those wishing to donate should have their non-perishable donation in bags on their porch for pick-up by 9 a.m.
