ELK GARDEN — Seven Elk Garden citizens submitted their candidacy papers to file for the seven local government offices in the municipal election on June 9.
Incumbent Lawrence “Buddy” Stonebraker will be seeking his second term as mayor, while Barbara Clemons, also an incumbent, will be trying for a seventh term as recorder.
Two incumbents from the five council positions have signed on to seek re-election, and they are Dave Tichnell, aiming for his 15th term, and Kevin Broadwater, presently in his first term as councilman.
Mike Paugh, Josh Lee, and Jody Paugh, three newcomers to the political scene, will be seeking the remaining seats for council members.
If elected they will be filling the spots of the three incumbents that chose not to run for re-election.
Dwayne Welch, serving as the town treasurer, Michael Burdock, in his first term, and Tom Braithwaite, who was first elected in 1983, are not vying for positions as councilmen.

Residents of the community may still file for town offices as a write-in candidate by obtaining the correct papers from the town recorder.
Those filling as write-in candidates must submit the completed and notarized papers by the deadline of April 28.
The names of the write-in candidates will not appear on the election ballot.
The seven candidates already seeking election have until Feb. 17 to withdraw and not have their name on the ballot.
March 31 has been set as the date for the ballot position drawing, and this procedure will take place at the Elk Garden town hall.
