A Bayard municipal court date has been set for mid-October for two youths who placed several non-poisonous water snakes in the outside mail box at the local post office sometime before the postmaster opened the box to retrieve mail.
Mayor, Steve Durst, announced at the recent town council meeting that he will preside over the court proceedings of the case that was ‘a stupid act by punk kinds.”
In other town business, the FEMA remapping of the community flood plain is continuing as a countywide project.
Tim Keaton, a representative of FEMA, inspected the flood levy zone of Bayard, and stated, “The area is in excellent shape and has passed with flying colors.”
Bayard town government members passed an agreement during the meeting to be in compliance with FEMA and have the engineer and remapping work completed by September 18, 2010.
Durst noted that this particular matter is crucial to be completed on time due to the standards of the insurance carrier and the continuation of coverage for the town. Related to this business was the subject of the issuance of building permits for community construction.
Durst mentioned that no construction is allowed in the flood plain.
“It is important to have a building permit system, to make sure no construction takes place in alleys, over a ditch, or on community streets,” said Durst.
Even though the business of paving potholes in the community has been on the agenda for several months, no estimates have yet been received for this project.
The plan which would include the paving of the roadway through the town cemetery may have to be tabled because of the soon approaching winter weather.
Durst announced the annual Bayard Cemetery cleanup will take place on Saturday, November 8.
Families are urged to remove flowers and memorials from the graves by Friday, Nov. 7, and may be replaced after the one-day cleaning process.
Disposal of any remaining flowers and memorials will take place on Saturday.
Community Trick or Treating will take on Thursday, October 30, from 6-8 p.m.
This activity is completed with the cooperation of the Bayard Fire Company, and those wishing to distribute treats to the local children should leave their porch lights on. The next Bayard town council meeting will take place on Friday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m., at the town hall on Spruce Street.
