PIEDMONT HERALD: Mill shutdown won't affect Luke water

LUKE - The Luke Mayor and Council met Wednesday, June 24, in the auditorium of the Luke City Building. The meeting was conducted by Mayor Joseph LaRue.
NewPage Luke Mill informed the Town on June 12 that they are taking a market-related shut down the week of July 5.
 Steam will be off from the early morning hours of Monday, July 6, until mid-afternoon on Monday, July 13. Residents should not experience any disruption in water.
During this week, the Maryland State Highway Administration will be performing a compression test on the steam line.
The town submitted a proposal and bid to the Allegany County Department of Community Services for Program Open Space. The town applied for 271 feet of fencing for the Nevison Avenue Ball field at a cost of $5,080.
The town has three summer workers through Garrett County and two through Allegany County in the Western Maryland Consortium Summer Program.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile was in Luke on Friday, June 12, and 49 units were collected. Upcoming dates for Bloodmobile visits in 2009-2010 are Aug. 21, Oct. 23, Dec. 18, Feb. 12, April 16 and June 11.
The town office and shop will be closed Monday, July 6, in observance of the July 4 holiday.
The Council agreed to renew the Comcast franchise agreement and the employees’ health care insurance.
A letter of thanks was received from the Westernport Giants Football Team for the town’s donation.
The Luke Homecoming Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m., July 16, at the City Building. 
The next council meeting will be 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 15.
