Spiggle and ATK receive awards at Mineral County United Way banquet

FROSTBURG, Md. -

Dr. Wayne Spiggle and ATK have been named the recipients of the United Way of Mineral County’s individual and business Community Caring Awards, which were presented at the Annual Campaign Kickoff and Awards banquet on Wednesday at Frostburg State University.
In order for an individual to be nominated for this award, Mineral County criteria states that he or she must reside in Mineral County and demonstrate a long-time commitment to volunteering and donating to the United Way and/or community partners. The business must meet the same criteria, in addition to encouraging workers to support the United Way by suggesting volunteer opportunities and/or conducting an employee campaign for contributions through payroll deduction.  Dr. Spiggle and ATK have continued to prove their commitment to the community and to the United Way.
Dr. Wayne Spiggle, Mineral County¹s awardee, is a recognized leader in his profession as well as his community involvement.  Founding partner of the Braddock Medical Group, Spiggle was on the medical staff at Sacred Heart for 38 years, department chair, medical staff president and now an honorary member.  He also was the founding chair of the Allegany Health Right program that provides comprehensive care to the poor and uninsured.  Currently, he is a clinician at Preston-Taylor and Tri-State Community Health Centers.
Additionally, Spiggle was a volunteer faculty for the University of MD School of Medicine for 17 years while serving in various roles with the Maryland State Medical Society and West Virginia State Medical Association.
Elected to the Mineral County Commission in 2004, Dr. Spiggle is an advocate of economic development opportunities and quality of life issues.  He also serves on many boards and organizations such as Family Crisis

Center, Keyser Rotary (Paul Harris fellow), Community Trust Foundation, and the United Way of Mineral County, chairing the first Legacy Program in the last three years.
Ed Smith, past president of United Way of Mineral County and the presenter of this award, says “Wayne exemplifies the true spirit of caring for your community.  His involvement goes well beyond what we have time to tell.”
Spiggle is the recipient of the first Greater Good Award presented by The Greater Cumberland Committee and has been instrumental in the recent establishment of the WV Rx program, serving as an advisory committee member and as a member of the WV Pharmaceutical Cost Management Council.
Spiggle is married to Betty and has six children and eight grandchildren.
Presenting the business Community Caring Award, Gary Wilson, President of United Way of Mineral County, says, “ATK and its employees continue to increase their participation with United Way, not only with Gary Geiger serving on our Executive Committee and other activities, but also Keith Funkhouser has demonstrated his support by his leadership and encouragement for everyone to get involved.”
ABL (Alliant Techsystems) is the largest defense contractor in West Virginia and the largest employer in Mineral County, currently employing over 1,300 employees, primarily from WV, MD and PA.  Management is an advocate of community involvement encouraging the staff to participate and to give of their time and resources.  Its employees serve on and support many organizations, such as Mineral and Allegany County,
Chambers of Commerce, The Greater Cumberland Committee, WV Manufacturers Association, WV Chamber of Commerce; and the WV High Tech Consortium.
The employees continue to support youth educational activities and programs, including the purchase of software for schools along with activities for the softball, basketball, soccer and football programs; Allegany and Mineral County youth livestock programs; youth shooting program, just to mention a few.
Regional non-profit organizations and agencies such as the United Way of Mineral and Allegany Counties, Burlington Family Home, Boy Scouts, and the Highland Arts Council are the recipients of varying types of support.
Additionally, scholarships are also provided at Potomac State College and Allegany College of Maryland.
ABL employees raise money throughout the year to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, March of Dimes Walk America, ALS Foundation, NAAR, Tri-State Toys for Happiness, and others.
The Metal Fabrication Department conducts a charity golf tournament (2nd year) to raise money for the Pediatrics Waiting Room at the new WMHS and Ali Ghan Shrine¹s Travel Fund for the Kids.  Employee teams participate in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake, softball, golf and bowling
leagues.
United Way of Mineral (and Allegany) County are the beneficiaries of corporate campaign monies and an employee campaign through payroll deduction that includes some Legacy contributors. ATK has been the
sponsor of the Mineral County Day of Caring and Sharing, and once again will be the major sponsor of
