KEYSER - Henry Falkowski, Ed.D., was named Potomac State College of West Virginia University’s Professor of the Year during the college’s recent Weekend of Honors.
Dr. Falkowski began teaching chemistry at the college in August 1976 and currently serves as professor of chemistry.
In addition to teaching chemistry classes, Dr. Falkowski also teaches a dinosaur class every spring that usually has a waiting list of students wanting to take the class, which culminates with a trip to the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, Pa.
According to a current student, “Dr. Falkowski is passionate about educating his students and challenges them to perform to their very best ability. He has been the best educator I have ever had.”
Dr. Falkowski has also served as the chairperson of the Campus Safety Council for many years and because of his guidance Potomac State has received the WVU Safety Committee Achievement Award many times.
In addition, he has received numerous awards and recognitions for his service to the college and to the community-at-large.
A co-worker had this to say, “Henry has a long history of service to the college.
He spends countless hours preparing and maintaining labs to provide the best student learning environment possible.”
Other words like “dedicated,” “hard working” and “enthusiastic” have also been used to describe Dr. Falkowski’s teaching style.
Dr. Falkowski has been a full member of the American Chemical Society for 36 years, is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, a contributing member of the International Naval Research Organization, a member of the Two-Year College Chemistry Consortium, a member of the Titanic Historical Society, a life member of the West Virginia Academy of Science, a life member of the Navy League of the United States, a friend of the U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship Memorial, a member of the Carnegie Natural History Museum and a member of the North Carolina Aquariums.
Dr. Falkowski earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He earned both his master’s degree in analytical chemistry and his doctorate in chemistry education from WVU.
He and his wife, Terry, reside in Keyser.
