Tiana Warner, a student at Keyser High School, has been accepted into the People to the People Student Ambassador Program, an educational travel program founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
During her travels, Warner will explore Spain, France, and Italy for three weeks in the summer of 2008 as a member of the local delegation.
By participating in the Mediterranean Discovery itinerary, Ms. Warner can earn academic credit while getting to know the people, culture, and history of the places she visits.
She will take part in a variety of activities, such as a community service project, meetings with government officials, and visiting with host families.
Acceptance into the program is a prestigious honor. After being invited to enroll, Warner submitted letters of recommendation and successfully completed an interview process.
Warner is currently a senior with a grade point average of 4.05 and has intentions of pursuing a degree in environmental science while attending West Virginia Wesleyan College.
She has been an active member of the Keyser High School FFA program, Mu Alpha Theta, the National Honors Society, Student Council, the Cultural Awareness Club, Hi-Y, and the KHS Band Guard, in addition to her membership in the county 4-H program.
She’s held offices in many of these organizations and earned numerous awards and honors.
President Eisenhower believed that ordinary citizens of different nations, if able to communicate directly, would solve their differences and find a way to live in peace.
He began People to the People in 1956. In 1963, it expanded its world reach by developing the Student Ambassador Program based in Spokane, Washington. As an Ambassador of the People, Warner will represent the best characteristics of our country: Hope, courage, openness, and a love of peace.
She will also head up a beautification project at the Burlington Library as part of her community service requirement for the Ambassador’s program.
In an effort to offset her travel expenses, Warner will be holding several fundraisers over the next several weeks.
These include a hoagie sale and a yard sale. If you would like to contribute to Tiana’s endeavors for her upcoming Student People to the People Ambassador trip, you may contact her at (304) 289-5414.
