PIEDMONT - More volunteers are needed for the scheduled cleanup day in Piedmont on Nov. 3, and mayor Ben Smith said during the latest city council meeting, “A few volunteers have signed on, but more are needed.”
Those who have not signed up to assist with this program may register at the city building.
With the cleanup to begin at 8 a.m., council member Rick Butler pointed out the several areas in the community that are “horrible,” including the sidewalks in front of the houses.
Smith said, “We will not be picking up discarded couches or people’s garbage,” and what will be collected are tree limbs and related items.
He added that the volunteer crew will “try to help the elderly and those that need help,” as he gave a reminder of, “We have to make people understand that a form must be signed to allow the volunteers on their property.”
Smith added to that statement, “If the paper is not signed, we will not go on the property.”
Butler said the event should be called Friendship Cleanup Day because, “We are all friends here in Piedmont.”
Paula Boggs, parks and recreation commissioner, said that Carl Belt has donated brooms and work gloves for the cleanup day.
In other business, Piedmont city officials agreed to sell the vacant lot that is located between the city building and the Riverside Rural Health Clinic, with the clinic being operated through Potomac Valley Hospital.
Smith said the city was to the point “to sell the lot or repair the retaining wall” on the back side of the property.
Boggs had contacted the West Virginia Municipal League to obtain information on the rules to sell the property.
One stipulation given by the Municipal League was the price for the lot should be sold for less than $1,000, and the size of the lot measures approximately 25 feet by 50 feet
