COLONIAL HEIGHTS — Nalena Klaas, president of American Legion Auxiliary, ALA, Unit 284 in Colonial Heights, was recently recognized by the ALA national organization as Virginia’s Unit Member of the Year during the 98th ALA National Convention Woman of the Year Luncheon in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The award, presented annually at the ALA’s National Convention, recognizes and honors ALA members for outstanding volunteer service and dedication to the organization’s mission of serving veterans, military, and their families.

Nominated by her unit, Klaas was then chosen at the ALA Department Convention in July to represent the ALA Department of Virginia at the ALA National Convention in August.

Also a member of the American Legion Riders, Klaas and her husband Skip traveled to the national convention in Minnesota on their motorcycles. They, along with other riders from around the country, participated in the American Legion Legacy Run. Money collected along the route is used for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund.

ALA members from around Virginia joined nearly 1,500 delegates, alternates, and distinguished guests from across the nation to attend the convention. The annual event brings thousands of members of the American Legion together to celebrate successes from the administrative year, elect national officers, and set national priorities to guide the Legion throughout the coming year.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the American Legion. A large delegation from Virginia was in attendance to watch Brett Reistad from Virginia be installed as the 100th American Legion National Commander.

Founded in 1919, the American Legion Auxiliary helps to advance the mission of The American Legion. To learn more, visit www.ALAforVeterans.org.
