KEYSER - Following the second special meeting of the Mineral County Commission in less than a week, president Jerry Whisner announced Tuesday that there will be no law enforcement levy on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.
Placing the levy on the ballot for the West Virginia general election in November was an agenda item for the July 24 regular meeting of the county commission, but no vote was taken at that time to proceed with plans to present the levy to the public.
Discussion was then centered on the law enforcement levy during the first special meeting, and again no decision was made, until the Tuesday afternoon meeting, when Whisner said, “This has been the most difficult decision we commissioners have had to make.
“We are deeply concerned over the safety of our deputies responding to calls alone,” he said, as he spoke about the recent drug seizure being completed with several arrests in Wiley Ford.
“We are equally concerned over the safety of our citizens,” he continued, while giving thanks to God that, “we live in an area that does not produce a lot of violent crime.”
Whisner stated, however, that he felt it was not appropriate to let the county citizens bear the burden of an additional levy at this time, and he also said a burden is carried by the deputies as safety issues are faced by them.
He said that the cost of the levy would amount to a couple of cents per dollar, saying the citizens already support the EMS, fire departments, and school levies.
“We are going to look at this again,” he said about the law enforcement levy, and in the future meetings will be held in each of the county’s municipalities to “receive public input.”
“We have asked the sheriff’s department to continue to do a good job,” with their law enforcement duties, he said.
