New Petersburg school names take effect July 1
PETERSBURG — Students across the Tri-Cities gleefully celebrated the start of their summer vacation yesterday as they boarded buses after the last day of school.
Many Petersburg elementary school students were leaving their school for technically the last time. Back in February the School Board officially voted to change the names of the three Petersburg schools that were named after confederate generals: A.P Hill, Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart.
When students return in the fall, A.P. Hill will be named Cool Springs Elementary, Robert E. Lee will be named Lakemont Elementary and J.E.B. Stuart will be named Pleasants Lane Elementary.
Renaming the schools after the neighborhoods where they're located was by far the most popular suggestion according to an online survey the School Board posted.
The name changes will officially take effect on July 1.
