WESTERNPORT - The Town of Westernport will have a new mayor and two new faces on the council in June.
Incumbent council member John “Tuck” Martin won the mayoral position in voting held Tuesday at the Town Hall, with 221 voters casting their ballots for him and 105 for challenger and former council member William E. Mayles Jr.
Voters were also asked to choose two commissioners to fill the seats currently held by Bob Lupton and Fred Pritts, and they overwhelming choose newcomer Allen Shapiro, with 244 votes, and Philip C. Whetstone, with 192.
Michael C. Amoroso came in third, with 128 votes, and Bob Pence received one write-in vote.
With Martin moving up to mayor, it is assumed one of the council’s first orders of business will be to appoint someone to fill his seat as commissioner.
Votes were cast on paper ballots Tuesday, which slowed the tabulation process. Final results were not posted until shortly after 10 p.m., with candidates and interested residents gathered around the City Building since the polls closed at 7 p.m.
