KEYSER - Apple Alley Players are getting a little “Footloose” this summer, with plans to present the popular dance musical for two weekends in July and August.
In a changeup from their normal schedule, the community theater group is moving their summer production indoors, presenting “Footloose” July 27-29 and Aug. 3-5 in the theater at Keyser High School.
Based on the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon, “Footloose” is the story of Ren McCormack, a typical teenager from the inner city who loves to dance. Imagine his culture shock, however, when his family moves to a small town in the middle of nowhere and he discovers dancing has actually been banned.
Ren decides, however, the best way to loosen up the town is to go against the local preacher and stage a dance - an act of defiance which causes many rifts between friends and family members.
Featuring the music of Tom Snow and Dean Pitchford, with additional lyrics by Kenny Loggins, “Footloose” is known for the tunes “Holding Out for a Hero,” “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” and, of course, “Footloose.”
Apple Alley’s version of “Footloose” will be under the direction of Tommy Nester, with musical direction by Melissa Tucker and choreography by Curtis Westfall.
Auditions for the show have been scheduled for Saturday, May 5, beginning at 10 a.m., and Sunday, May 6, beginning at 6 p.m., and will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Davis Street in Keyser.
According to Nester, the cast will consist mostly of adults and teenagers, although “there may be small roles for middle school-aged children in the ensemble.”
Those wishing to audition will need to prepare a short song for auditions as well as be prepared to learn a short dance combination and be able to participate in a cold read of scenes from the show.
A list of the available roles can be found on the Facebook page “Apple Alley Players Footloose the Musical Auditions.”
