KEYSER - The Mineral County Middle School Science Fair was held at Keyser High School on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018.
Winners from Frankfort Middle School and Keyser Middle School science fairs competed for county honors and a chance to advance to the regional competition. All first, second, and third place winners in the county fair are now eligible to compete in the RESA8 Regional Science Fair – Junior Division on March 20 at the Ranson Civic Center in Ranson, West Virginia.  
Students who placed and their respective categories are as follows:
Animal Sciences:  First place, Addison Cross from Frankfort Middle School. Addison was the only participant in this category.
Behavioral and Social Sciences:  First place, Hayden Wyatt and Honorable Mention, Kaitlyn Stine. Both students were from Keyser Middle School.
Biochemistry:  First place, BillieJo Bane – KMS; Second, Jonathan Lewis - FMS; Third, Timothy Umstead – FMS; and Honorable Mention, Emma Craddock – FMS.
Biomedical & Health Sciences: First place, Averi Smith – KMS; second place, Brooke Jacobs – FMS; third place, Mikenna Love – FMS; Honorable Mention #1, Halley Smith – FMS; and Honorable Mention #2 – Adyn Weaver - FMS.
Chemistry:  First place went to Chase McCoy - FMS; Second, Nathan Lange - FMS; and Third, Madison Rhodes – KMS.
Earth Science & Environmental Sciences:  First place, Jillian Griffith from Frankfort Middle School. Jillian was the only participant in this category.
Energy:  First place, Trenton Denne - KMS; Second place, Garrett Ferguson – FMS; and third place, Stephen Shambaugh – FMS.
Engineering:  First place, Alec Stanislawczyk - KMS; Second place, Aurora Mearkle - FMS; Third place, Brittan Gough - FMS; and Honorable Mention, Zoe Long – KMS.  
Material Science:  First place, Ethan Clark - FMS; Second place, Zane Nelson - FMS; Third place, Dimitri Shultz - KMS; and Honorable Mention, Cierra Graham – KMS.
Mathematics: First place, E.J. Guy – KMS; and Second place, John Dennison –  FMS.
Microbiology:  First place, Adrianna Layman from Frankfort Middle. Adrianna was the only participant in this category.
Physics and Astronomy:  First place, Emily Lewis; Second place, Zachary Barnhart; Third place, Elizabeth Clark. All students in this category were from Frankfort Middle School.
Plant Sciences: First place, Sophia Lord – FMS; Second place, Victoria Smith – KMS; Third place, Charity Lark – KMS; Honorable Mention #1, Brooke Kesner – KMS; and Honorable Mention #2 – Tiffany Sites – FMS.  
Robotics & Intelligent Machines: Second place, Rebekah Biser from Keyser Middle School.
System Software: First place, Hunter Powell; and Honorable Mention, Joe Rogers. Both students were from Keyser Middle School.  
Mr. Cary Kyle, counselor and Mrs. Lois Spencer, Principal of Mineral County Technical Center, coordinated programming for the science fair participants.
The County Fair Awards Program was held following the judging in the Keyser High School Large Group Room.  Assisting with the Fair from Keyser High School were:  Michael Lewis, Principal; Colin Rotruck and Sean Biser, teachers at KHS; and Julie Aronhalt food services supervisor at KHS. Pat Mason, retired Assistant Superintendent of Mineral County Schools oriented and supervised the judges. Scott Hott, Jacob Schoenadel, Kim Eyler, and William Wright, science teachers from Keyser and Frankfort Middle Schools chaperoned the students.
Judges for the fair were: David Idleman, Tom Denne, John Stakem, Laura Wilson, Gary Kalbaugh, Mary Kaye Staggers, Sue Stakem, Rob Woy, and Joe Sank.
