KEYSER - The voting for the “Ultimate WVU Fan” is over, and although Keyser’s Rick Harshbarger did not win, he says he had fun with the competition.
Harshbarger, who has never missed a West Virginia University men’s home basketball game since 1987 and only missed one football game since the new stadium opened, was one of three state residents in the running for the title of “Ultimate WVU Fan.”
To be chosen, each of them had to design a WVU cap and Rick’s design - “Mountaineer Pride” - was placed in competition with the other two entries.
Supporters were then asked to go online and vote for their favorite hat.
“My hat finished third,” he told the News Tribune Thursday. “The one with just the WV on the front won.”
According to Harshbarger, the online competition set a record, with over 42,000 total votes.
Harshbarger said he had fun with the competition, and the up side is, he gets to keep the hat he designed.
