Sitting at my desk for the past two weeks waiting to hear who would be tossing their hats into the ring this year to run for Mineral County Commission, the Board of Education, or even Keyser City Council, I have one important question on my mind:
Where are all those people who said they were going to “make their opinion known” at election time?
All those people on Eye on Whatever who spend so much time running the city or county from behind the keyboard … where are they?
As of writing this mid-afternoon Friday - two weeks after the filing period opened - only two people had filed to run for a seat on the board (three are coming open), two people filed to run for the single seat on the commission, one person filed to run for Keyser City Council (two are coming open), and one person had filed to run for Keyser mayor.

(Update from Monday: Five people have filed to run for the board.)
That is just plain sad.
And while I would be the first one to admit holding public office is not an easy job (I’ve never held one but I’ve sure covered enough of them to know!), I also find it very interesting that soooo many people out there are eager to criticize those in office, but when the opportunity arises for THEM to step up and do something about it … very few do.
Come on people … let’s turn your words into action!
We live and work in a very fine city and county. But they both have their challenges and they both need dedicated, action-oriented people to guide us into a new tomorrow.
And please, this is in no way to be misconstrued as an indictment of the current office holders. Many of them are doing a fine job and are very dedicated to their positions and their constituents.
It is, however, a call to action for those out there who like to talk a good game … but have never stepped out onto the field.
We need some new faces to work together with our tried and true leaders … that is why the board, commission and Keyser Council are set up on an alternating election schedule. New folks come in to sit along side their counterparts who have been there awhile.
It helps bring in fresh ideas, tempered by the voices of experience.
So here’s the thing: You have ONE WEEK from today to get off those chairs, out from behind those keyboards, and try to make a difference in our little area.
Saturday, Jan. 27, is the deadline to file candidacy papers in both Keyser and Mineral County.
Please note: Both the City of Keyser and Mineral County Clerk’s office will be closed on Saturday, but if your candidacy papers are postmarked on Jan. 27, you are good to go.
Come on … keep me busy next week reporting on all the people who decided at the last minute to make a difference!
