KEYSER - The Mineral County Board of Education Tuesday unanimously approved Keyser Primary School principal Barbara Kesner as the new director of curriculum and instruction, preK/elementary/HeadStart.
The county administrative office had been vacant since Nov. 13, when Susan Ray retired.
Tuesday’s approval was actually a second attempt at filling the position. The task had originally been on the board’s agenda for their Jan. 2 meeting, during which time superintendent Shawn Dilly recommended Wiley Ford Primary principal Paula Athey for the job.
The board went into executive session that night to discuss the recommendation, and when they came back out into open session, denied Dilly’s candidate with a 2-2 vote.
Lara Courrier and Kevin Watson voted to approve Athey’s appointment, but Tom Denne and William Ludwick voted against.
The fifth board member, Rob Woy, who serves as president, chose not to vote to break the tie.
As a result of the failure of the motion, the board members asked Dilly to come back to the next meeting with a second recommendation, which he did Tuesday.
Dilly told the News Tribune with the appointment of Kesner, the county is now advertising for a new principal at KPS.
In other business handled by the board Tuesday evening, the officials accepted the resignation of Kevin Watson as the interim head coach and auxiliary coach with the Frankfort High School football program.
Watson had told the News Tribune earlier in the week that he chose to resign - and not run for re-election to the board - in order to spend more time with his family.
