CUMBERLAND - A Barton man has been charged with attempted murder after assaulting and stabbing his ex-girlfriend when she picked him up in Lonaconing late Tuesday evening.

CUMBERLAND - A Barton man has been charged with attempted murder after assaulting and stabbing his ex-girlfriend when she picked him up in Lonaconing late Tuesday evening.
According to the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the emergency department of the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center at 1:21 a.m. Wednesday for a report of an assault.
Upon arrival at the hospital, they spoke with the 39-year-old female victim who advised that she had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend. The victim stated that around 10:30 p.m. she picked her ex-boyfriend up at the Pit and Go in Lonaconing and drove to a location on Laurel Run Road in the Barton area of Allegany County.
The female stated that while on Laurel Run Road, her ex-boyfriend became enraged and began punching her in the face. The female victim was able to exit her vehicle and attempted to run to a nearby house for help.
She said before she could reach the house, however, her ex-boyfriend tackled her in the snow and continued to punch her. The female victim stated that while on the ground the male produced a penknife and began stabbing her in the back. She stated that she was then choked unconscious. The female advised that when she regained conscious, she drove the male to an address in Barton and then drove to a nearby residence for help.
The female victim was then driven to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The investigation into this incident revealed that the female victim sustained head and facial trauma consistent with being assaulted and had multiple stab wounds on her lower back area.
As a result of the investigation, deputies arrested 43-year-old Thomas Andrew Custer of Barton and charged him with attempted second degree murder first degree assault, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, theft of less than $1,000 and malicious destruction of property.
Custer was taken before the District Court Commissioner and held without bond in the Allegany County Detention Center.
