KEYSER - Professional basketball player James “JC” Carlton is coming back to Mineral County during the weekend of Nov. 30 – Dec. 4 to give leadership to the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce “Wellness Weekend,” sponsored by the Keyser Wal-mart.
JC was in Keyser for Spartan Day at Keyser High School on April 29, 2016. He participated in the effort to draw a Spartan Race into the county along with Blackrock Resort owner and now chamber president John Lecky, Kathryn McCall from the Washington Sports Club, and Col. Tim Nye from Spartan.
KHS principal Mike Lewis and coach Scott Furey set up the events at the high school and the highlight seemed to be JC playing basketball on the gym floor with the basketball team.
It left a strong impression with JC and he has been in touch with several KHS students and John since.
When he was here last year, JC played with the NBA Oklahoma Thunder franchise on their G League, The Oklahoma City Blue. Later in 2016 he signed with the NBL (National Basketball League Czech Republic) and played the 2017 season in Europe. For 2018, JC is signed with the NBL in Australia, and plans to return to the NBA for the 2019 season.
During the break, he has been in his Washington, D.C., home, pursuing his dream of business ownership with a catering service focused on healthy eating options.
Currently he is training for business with a mentor in D.C. and in collaboration on opening the business for his career after basketball.
JC is passionate about consistently working toward holistic health through fitness and nutrition, training for excellence on the court or off, and serving his communities through motivating, enlightening, and mentoring kids.
For the Wellness Weekend, JC will visit with kids in schools in different sectors of the county, including Elk Garden, Short Gap and Keyser, and serve as grand marshall for the Elk Garden Christmas Parade on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m.
A “meet and greet” will take place in Keyser on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until noon at the Chamber of Commerce at 40 N Main St.
Warrior Fitness, right across the street at 41 N. Main, will host an “NBA Training Style Workout with JC” from 2-4 p.m.
Scott Furey, Keyser track and field coach, is again assisting the planning, along with members of the Chamber of Commerce.
Further details will be released later this week.
