CHARLESTON - The West Virginia Psychological Association awarded Del. Gary Howell (R- Mineral County) with the Outstanding State Legislator Award on Friday, Oct. 6.
Howell was presented with the award in Charleston at the WVPA Fall Conference.
President Dr. Keith Beard presented the award on behalf of the board of directors, in recognition of Del. Howell’s lead sponsorship of a bill designed to improve efficiency for doctoral psychologists as they navigate the licensure process in West Virginia.
Because of Del. Howell’s assistance, the doctoral licensure process in West Virginia more closely mirrors that of neighboring states. The bill passed during the 2016 legislative session, and has since been fully incorporated.
Dr. Beard said, “Del. Howell’s recognition of the mental health needs within the state and the ability that this law has in helping meet those needs, is just one of the reasons why he is being given this award. Del. Howell and his staff were instrumental in guiding psychologist leaders. We hope that other representatives will follow his lead and continued efforts will be made to improve the psychological well-being of our citizens.”
Already, a greater number of psychology licensees have come to West Virginia as a result.
