PIEDMONT - Piedmont town employees will now receive their work pay every two weeks instead of previously receiving their checks twice a month as the motion for approval was passed at the Wednesday evening government meeting.
Months ago, Mickey Racco, a town maintenance worker, asked the town council to make the change in the pay periods, however, the commissioners voted to continue with making payday for the employees twice monthly.
Carrie Lewis, part time town clerk, told the council this subject was brought to her attention just within the past week by Racco.
She said that there would three months out of the year when three pay checks would be received by employees.
Lewis said the change to handling the pay checks as part of town business every two weeks is “no problem for me.”
Phil Hollingsworth, town clerk, did add to the business discussion of town employees, when she said that when the workers take a day off from work, “Let us know.”
She added that often, “We hear from other employees” about who is not working on a particular day.
“We are not informed” about what employee will not be working, Hollingsworth said.
In other business, two motions were approved, with both dealing with the town’s water plant.
The first was to make an extension grant amendment for Small cities Block Grant until 2018 that will allow for completion of instrumentation update at the water plant.
The other was a discussion on whether to continue with a service contract for related items at the water plant, with the present contract running out on Aug. 17.
Mayor Ben Smith said prior to the vote about the service coverage, “Should we take a chance?” saying that one of the water meters at the plant has a price tag of $40,000.
The council members voted to pay the just over $1,300 premium for the service contract
