KEYSER - The work of Mineral County’s Future Farmers of America takes more than just the efforts of members and advisors. The help of parents, family and the community is vital.
The chapter this year recognized Jeff and Joyce Turner and Jimmy and J.W. See as chapter members with honorary degrees.
“Mineral County has some of the best and brightest students in the state,” said student teacher Brianna Shanholtzer.
Shanholtzer recognized this year’s freshman students Daniel Owens and Michala Williams with the Star Greenhand awards for excellence and growth with their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) and for leadership and participation in the FFA.
Star Farmers for the year included Star Chapter Farmer Jacob Hollingsworth and Star Agribusiness Derek Alt.
John Owens was awarded Star State FFA Degree for the Northeastern FFA Region and Whitney Alt and Zackery Miller will receive their American Degrees at the National Convention this fall.
Sarah Page and Timmy Nester are candidates for the American FFA Degree at the 2016 National FFA Convention. This is highest honor the national FFA can give to a member.
Mikhaela Barnes, Leah Bittinger, Kourtney Browning, Autumn Cornachia, Abigail Johnson, Susannah Mayhew, John Owens, Emma Pancake, Parker Riley, Victoria Smith and Logan Staggs will receive their State FFA Degrees at the state convention in July. This is the highest honor the state FFA can give to a member.
Derek Alt and John Owens were winners of the West Virginia Proficiency Awards in Sheep Entrepreneurship and Beef Placement and will represent West Virginia at the National Proficiency Award Program.
Mineral County students competed and excelled at the national level bringing home numerous awards for the year.
“We are a very active chapter,” said advisor John Ritchie as participants in the various career development events which are coming up or have been completed for the year.
Members also thanked their advisors, parents and community members who have been instrumental in their training including Kevin Staggs, Leonard Spiker and Dave Long.
