To the Editor:
The Keyser-Mineral County Library is asking for help from the community to "Make our Match" by raising $7,000 by June 30 to qualify for our full state funding.
The Keyser-Mineral County Library System, which includes libraries in Keyser, Burlington, and Fort Ashby, plays a vital role in our community. In fact, at any given time, 20 people in our community are using library services. Services include providing books and electronic forms of media for our enjoyment, serving as a community center for the education and socialization of our children, functioning as a technology center for our citizens, and offering a centralized site for business-related activities. Many believe an active and fully-functioning library is essential for community growth and enrichment. Thanks to all the service organizations, businesses, and individuals that have already helped by donating money, goods, or services. Your support is very much valued and appreciated.
The citizens of Keyser, Burlington, and Fort Ashby deserve a good library; however, funding continues to be problematic. The library system receives state funding that must be matched by local funds. While several county agencies contribute to funding; namely, Mineral County Board of Education, County Commission, and the City of Keyser, the budget shortfall lingers. Donations from service organizations, businesses, and individuals are critical to the continued operation of the library system. State regulations state that funding may not be generated from federal or state grants; it must be collected through our community to demonstrate our commitment to the library system.
The state regulation has not been good for the Keyser-Mineral County Library System. In fiscal years 2014 and 2015, we lost approximately $20,000 in state funding because we could not provide an adequate match. This year, however, with your generosity, it is our hope that we will be able to continue operating the libraries at the current level without cutting hours or services.
If you believe a library brings value to our community, please consider sending a donation. No amount is too small—every bit helps. And remember in the words of Keith Richards, “When you are growing up, there are two institutional places that affect you most powerfully:  the church, which belongs to God, and the public library, which belongs to you.”
