WESTERNPORT - Third grade Accelerated and Enrichment (AEP) students at Westernport Elementary School have been working on a project about different types of assistance dogs.

The students recently had the opportunity to meet Teddy, a 14-month old black Labrador retriever who is being trained by inmates at WCI and weekend volunteer Janet Hendershot. Teddy showed the students how he responds to commands from Ms. Hendershot.

At the end of the demonstration, Teddy was allowed to “say hello” to students so that they could pet him. Teddy will soon finish his training in Cumberland and return to New York to be placed with a veteran who needs his assistance.

This training program is sponsored by America’s VetDogs, established in 2003. It is a is a sister organization to the Guide Dog Foundation, established in 1946.
