Morning Jolt: Family saves kitten tossed out of car

A Michigan couple were driving on the freeway in Dearborn, Mich., when they saw a kitten tossed from a speeding car. Ronald Haas and Niel Rishoi quickly stopped and picked up the kitten, who surprisingly was OK other than being “scared and panicked.” The couple then adopted her and named her Dora.

American Rivers named the Potomac River, known as ‘the nation’s river,’ as it flows through the capital, the most endangered in the country.

Keyser Council to conduct hearings on proposed water, sewer hikes

KEYSER – The Keyser City Council will conduct public hearings on proposed water and sewer rate hikes at its regularly scheduled May 23 Council meeting. Because of an expected large crowd, the meeting will not be held at City Hall, with the site to be announced in the near future.

Keyser City Council accepts Carl Belt bid to breach Limestone Dam

KEYSER – The city of Keyser Wednesday night accepted a bid by Carl Belt contractors to breach the Limestone Dam. One of a half-dozen companies to submit proposals for the project, Belt submitted a low bid of $84,600.

Morning Jolt: Bit by snake at Wal-Mart?

A man says he was bitten by a rattlesnake at a Wal-Mart in eastern Washington state. The man was in the outdoor gardening area and said he bent down to pick up a stick, but it turned out to be a rattlesnake. The snake wasn’t happy about being picked up and so bit the man, who was rushed to a hospital. The man survived but might have permanent damage to his hand.

The top ten of this year’s Miss Golden Tornado pageant were: Kendra Johnson, Charity Jones, Ashley Evans, Jasmine Redman, Sara Reed, Bridget Dohony, Linae Riley,  Brooke Hesse, Chey Harris,  and winner, Emily LaParle.

Mineral County honors Jeanne Clites as Teacher of the Year

KEYSER – Frankfort Middle School teacher Jeanne Clites was honored as Mineral County’s 2013 Teacher of the Year Thursday evening at the annual banquet sponsored by the Mineral County Board of Education and First United Bank and Trust.
Clites, who credited retired teacher Marie Wagoner for inspiring her to become a teacher, accepted her award with humility, saying, “I don’t believe I’m the best teacher in Mineral County, because I’m not.”

A quiet Piedmont still remains tense

PIEDMONT – Things were a lot quieter at this week's Piedmont City Council meeting, but there was still clearly tension in the air as the parks and recreation commissioner expressed his displeasure that actions had been taken at the town pool without his knowledge.
According to the mayor, however, someone had to start work on getting the pool ready to open because the commissioner was clearly not doing  his job.
“There's been a few things going on in my department without me, and I'm angry about that,” parks and recreation commissioner Ray Hall said.
