Get a box of odds and ends at a sale or auction and who knows what kind of treasures you will find.

Mineral County Genealogy Society President Debbie Fleming recently shared items she found in a box. Tucked inside were old fans with local ads, a baptism certificate, and an advertisement from an area plumber complete with washers for when they would be needed.

Member Donnie Leatherman brought a copy of Fred Bosley’s book for members to look at, along with a 102-year-old rolling pin made from a tree on the Bane Farm.

Members of the society congratulated Dottie Hughes and Betty Band Dzubba on their recognition as Mineral County History Heroes.

The society is continuing to work on its next cemetery book. Once completed, the book will be available in printed form and on CD.

The preservation of the Barrick and McCarty cemeteries is a continuing project that the society is considering. Preliminary plans are for the property to be donated to the Mineral County Historical Society with the genealogy society to maintain it.

The genealogy society meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. and Janes United Methodist Church.
