KEYSER -- Frankfort coach Kevin Whiteman and his players will probably be sending Christmas cards to Phil Carr and the Northern Garrett Huskies.
Northern’s 14-12 win over Southern on Friday night boosted FHS’ ranking one-tenth of a point.
Sounds insignificant, but that was the margin by which the Falcons took the fourth seed in the WVSSAC Class AA football playoff brackets, released Sunday.
Frankfort finished with a final rating of 11.1 points, edging Westside (11.0) and Bluefield (10.9) for the coveted spot.
It means the Falcons will host two home games, assuming they get by No. 13 Herbert Hoover in Saturday’s first round game in Short Gap. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
Both Westside and Bluefield would have won tiebreakers with FHS.
Herbert Hoover (6-4) will be rested after a bye week.
The Huskies lost their regular season finale, ironically to Keyser’s foe, Point Pleasant.
That 33-8 loss ended a five-game winning streak.
The two teams have no common opponents.
Keyser passed Ravenswood, who lost to Ripley last Friday, for the seventh seed.
The first playoff game at Tornado Alley will kick off at 7:30 on Friday night.
The Golden Tornado will face a tough test in the Big Blacks, who also went 7-3 this season and won their last five games, with the last four wins all over West Virginia playoff teams (Ravenswood, Williamstown, Herbert Hoover, and Chapmanville).
Both Keyser and Point Pleasant lost to Wayne: KHS on the road in Week 1, 22-0, and Point Pleasant at home in Week 6, 22-10.
The one-game-at-a-time mantra is surely ingrained in the Keyser players’ heads, but it’s hard not to notice that a win this weekend would likely mean a rematch with 2008 spoilers Magnolia.
Playoff sites are chosen by the higher seed; time and date are selected by the visiting team.
For brackets from all three West Virginia classifications, see Page 6.
