KEYSER — The Veterans Day ceremony scheduled for this morning at 11 a.m. in front of the Mineral County Courthouse has been canceled. A ceremony organized by local veterans groups is being held at the Keyser VFW, just across Armstrong Street from the Courthouse.
The courthouse ceremony had been organized after it was learned that the traditional Veterans Day parade would not be held. Concerned that no organized event would be held in Keyser, city and county officials quickly put together a ceremony at the courthouse that included the Keyser High School Band, the Young Marines, area fire departments, elected officials and a retired Army general to serve as the main speaker.
After the ceremony was announced, however, organizers learned that veterans groups had organized a ceremony at the same time, in the Keyser VFW.
Keyser Mayor William “Sonny” Rhodes met with the veterans groups Monday night in a bid to find a compromise solution that would allow for both ceremonies, but was unsuccessful. In deference to the veterans' groups, Rhodes and county officials agreed to cancel the courthouse event.
Anyone who had planned to attend the ceremony at the courthouse is welcome to attend the VFW event.
