KEYSER  — Commissioner Wayne Spiggle spoke to the members of the Mineral County Building Safety Agency during the recent meeting, saying, “We must get serious,” referring to a time frame compliance enforcement issue.
Presenting a proposal to restructure the county ordinance adhered to by the agency, he said a time line should “be defined” when dealing with complaints from citizens on health and safety concerns.
Scott Clay, county planner, stated the local ordinance was adopted based
on the Raleigh County set of laws, adding, and, “There are no times specified in that code.”
Feeling 30 days is long enough for a first offense, Everett Metheny said something minor as “cleaning up garbage or buttoning up a building” should not take that long to accomplish.
He also mentioned that he has been personally verbally attacked by people because the clean up process on property has taken too long.
Making a comment about a structure in the northern end of the county that has been in violation of the rules of the Building Safety Agency for an extended time, Metheny said the property “is embarrassing to Short Gap.”
Clay will seek assistance from the office of the prosecuting attorney dealing with times set for compliance to the code.
Another item of business was discussed when a new case in Fort Ashby was brought before the agency, as Clay said the complaint was not a “building issue,” but rather a litter concern as he told about an abundance of garbage bags piled high on the property.
Mentioning a property in Wiley Ford, Metheny said the same type of trash issue is present on that particular lot.
“There are garbage bags piled everywhere on the lot, and I don’t know what is in them, but it is unsightly,” he said.
Spiggle suggested during the next Litter Control/Recycling Committee meeting verification be made on the duties of the county litter control officers and how they could possibly assist the Building Safety Agency.
The Litter Control/Recycling Committee meeting is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 9, at 9:30 a.m., at the 911 Center.
