KEYSER —  A Cumberland woman died Wednesday  afternoon as the result of injuries sustained in a head-on collision on state Route 28 near the Division of Highways garage at Short Gap.
The Mineral County Sheriff's Department said the 2:20 p.m. accident occurred when a Cadillac Escalade traveling north on Route 28 was “for whatever reason” in the southbound lane and collided with a Nissan Altima being driven south by Alyssia Cage, 21, of Cumberland.
Cage and a passenger,  Carrol Moran, 45, also of Cumberland, were entrapped in their vehicle and had to be removed by emergency personnel.
Both were transported to Cumberland Memorial Hospital, where Cage was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Escalade was Lisa Shreve, 43, of Fort Ashby, who was also injured and transported to the hospital.
Officials said both Moran and Shreve were listed in serious condition.
Fort Ashby and Short Gap Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, along with Trooper 5 from the Maryland State Police.
Due to the close proximity of the accident to the hospital, however, the medic from Trooper 5 boarded am ambulance and accompanied the injured to the hospital via land.
Sheriff's Deputy Brian Kerling was the investigating officer, assisted by Deputy Kevin McKone.
The details of the accident remain under investigation.
Other agencies responding to the scene included Ridgeley Fire and Rescue and Cumberland Fire and EMS.
