Jim Hannas, Street/Sewer Supervisor for the city of Keyser, advises residents that the Street Department and the Keyser City Police Department monitors local and statewide weather predictions. The police department is in steady contact at all hours with the Street Supervisor, keeping him advised of street conditions. When snowfall or below-freezing temperatures are predicted, the Street Department personnel are placed on alert.
The city has been divided into different areas and one or more areas are assigned to each snow-removal unit. Each operator knows his priority streets in his area or areas. These streets are prioritized as follows:
First priority: Streets adjacent to hospitals, police and fire stations, and dangerously steep streets.
Second priority: Main arteries, heavily traveled streets and streets adjacent to businesses.
Third priority: Collector streets between main arteries.
Fourth priority: Side streets.
Fifth priority: Alleys.
The crews will continue to treat and plow the streets in their assigned area until the traffic is flowing safely. If the storm continues in intensity, the operators will remain in the same pattern until the storm subsides. When the condition occurs, the operator begins to widen out streets and intersections in his area.
Please remember that Street Department crews work around the clock to keep city streets open and passable. We are aware of the situation on your street, and it will be addressed. Remember that the plow operators do not deliberately plow snow into your driveway. Most of the time it is unavoidable. Street Department personnel are busy doing everything possible to cope with the winter conditions.
If you have an emergency or complaint, call the City Garage at 304-788-5173. The Street Department will try to help you as soon as possible. I hope this information will prove helpful. On behalf of the Street Department, I wish to extend our appreciation for your continued cooperation and also wish you a safe winter.
