ELK GARDEN - Although the exact times for the operational hours for the Elk Garden Post Office are not known at this time, the results of a POST Plan procedure did reveal the local office would have a reduction of hours for weekday window services.
A public meeting, open to the mountaintop postal customers, drew 14 people, and Patty Jessee, manager of post office operations, spoke about the survey information delivered to 478 customers, with 103 being returned.
The survey allowed the postal customers to select one of four options, including the realignment of daily operating hours, which was favored by 89 people completing the survey.
The other three options involved the closing of the Elk Garden Post Office, with suggestions of having all customers receiving rural delivery, or having a post office in a local store, or having Elk Garden mail delivered to another nearby post office.
Jessee stated that as part of cost-cutting efforts, due to millions of transactions lost to the postal system largely because of online opportunities, salaries have been frozen, starting with top officials.
In addition, she stated when the local post office goes to reduced hours, a
possibility may occur of having the lobby area opened for 24 hours.
A recent communication to the EG Post Office from Paul Bradshaw, Appalachian
District coordinator, showed the local facility will provide four hours of window service each weekday. The Saturday schedule for services will remain the same as before, with the four hours being from 8 a.m. to noon.
The announcement of what the weekday operational hours will be for the Elk Garden Post Office is expected with the next month.
