  • Commissioner to outline Mineral County Day for TGCC

    CUMBERLAND - The Greater Cumberland Committee will hold its first membership meeting of the new year on Thursday, Jan. 3, at the Cumberland Country Club.
    Among the presenters will be Mineral County Commissioner Janice LaRue, who will talk about the importance of Mineral County Days, scheduled this year for Feb. 13-14 in Charleston.
    Bob Smith, co-chairman of the annual PACE reception in Annapolis, will also speak to the group.
    Both LaRue and Smith will share insight into the various legislative talking points in conjunction with the two events, as well as TGCC's underlying goal of regional relevance.
    PACE will be held at the Annapolis Loew's Hotel Jan. 24-25 with a theme of "Energizing Maryland," and will include a reception and legislative breakfast, as well as sufficient time before and after each event to engage the
    Maryland Delegation on issues specific to Mountain Maryland.
    Talking points with a focus on Allegany and Garrett counties include the North/South Highway, Energy Corridor, Education Requests by Allegany College of Maryland, Garrett College and Frostburg State University, the Labor Day Initiative, Tourism Promotion Funding and the 2014World's Canoe Slalom Championships.
    Mineral County Days will be held Feb. 13-14 in Charleston with a State of the State address, meetings with department heads, staff and legislators, a luncheon and afternoon reception at the West Virginia Culture
    Center and State Museum.
    Discussions will focus on specific issues relating
    to Mineral County in the areas of transportation and economic development as well as recognizing advances in the county.
    The agenda for the GCC meeting will also include a detailed update provided by the Education Work Group chair, Dr. Richard MacLennan.
    The Greater Cumberland Committee is a not-for-profit member based organization of 80 civic and business leaders representing Allegany and Garrett counties in Maryland, Mineral and Hampshire counties in West Virginia, and Bedford and Somerset counties in Pennsylvania.
    The Jan 3 meeting gets underway at 11:30 a.m.
